Nutrition Tips by Jessica Loring, Registered Dietitian

Smart Snacking While Cycling

During the week of Ride The Rockies, you will find a common place to snack and refuel is on your bike. Since most of you will be cycling longer than two hours, fuel throughout the day is essential in order to keep your energy stores full. Eating while on your bike takes some practice and concentration and certain safety precautions should be considered. A mouthful of food can affect your breathing and can cause a cyclist to cough or choke. If you are a rider that chooses to eat while on your bike, be sure and keep the following tips in mind:

  • If you are a first time rider, practice eating during training rides.
  • If you choose to pack a snack in a baggie, don’t seal it. Instead just fold over the top, which will make it easier to get the snack out with one hand.
  • If you have difficulty eating while riding, stop at an aid station or pull off on the side of the road to consume your snack.
  • The packaging on energy bars is often difficult to open. Try tearing the top off before you start your ride or removing the wrapper all together.
  • Keep your snacks for fuel in the outside pocket of your jersey.
  • If you choose to munch on an energy bar or fruit while climbing, maintain concentration on the road or wait until you reach the summit of the hill.

Along the route, you will find food vendors at each aid station. However, it can be very helpful to pack a few small snacks in your bag or jersey to take along for the day. The secret for maximum performance in events lasting more than 2 hours is to snack frequently, every 20 to 30 minutes. Below is a list of some compact, nonperishable foods that can give you the extra boost you need:
  • Raisins
  • Other Dried Fruits (cherries, apricots, apples)
  • Fig Newton’s
  • Energy Bars or Gels
  • Trail Mix with Carob Chips
  • Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwich
  • Toaster Pastries – Look for ones with all natural organic ingredients. They can be a great alternative to energy bars.
  • Graham Crackers with Peanut Butter
Training Tips by Rob Lockey, Optimize Endurance Services

We are fast approaching to the start of the tour!
  • Your training should be ramped up with climbs, climbs, and more climbs.
  • Your weekend rides should now be sustained climbs, focused on increasing your average speeds over longer distances.
  • Try for 30minutes or more of sustained climbing if you can
  • You didn’t sign up for “Ride the Flattest place on Earth” so be specific with your training and get out and climb.
During the weekdays you should focus on higher intensity, shorter duration rides that will help increase your top speed.
  • Think interval sets of 2 to 1 or even 1 to 1 work to rest ratio at or above your lactate threshold ex.6minute workx3minutes rest.
  • You will want to focus on different types of riding during the week versus on weekends in order to improve your overall cycling skills
  • Doing the same loop, go somewhere else or reverse the loop.
  • This will make you a much stronger cyclist than if you only focused in developing one type of cycling
  • Challenge yourself.
A final tip for outdoor rides (I said this last Pedal Points, and feel I necessary to be said again and again):
  • Be sure to practice your ‘on bike’ fueling when you ride outside!
  • Eating and drinking constantly helps to keep the engine running efficiently and lack of proper fueling often is the reason for poor performance.
Need structure? It’s not too late to follow the Free Training Plans available on Optimize Endurance Services website or even step up and purchase a complete plan. The idea behind the Free Plans and Purchased Plans is to structure and diversify your training in order to get you as ready as possible for Ride The Rockies. Please don't hesitate to Contact OES with questions you may have, we're here to help!
Group Riding Tips

  • In less than five weeks, you and 2,000 other bicyclists will be sharing the scenic roads of Colorado with each other AND with motor vehicles and local community members. Remember, roads are open to cars, so stay alert! Always be predictable to ensure your safety and the safety of all bicycles and vehicles sharing the road.
  • What does “predictable” look like? It begins with following the rules of the road, just as if you were driving a car. Ride in a straight line, a consistent distance from the edge of the roadway or along the shoulder. Signal your intentions before turning, slowing and stopping; call out your actions as well. Look over your shoulder before moving left or right.
  • Practice riding with others and using these skills as you prepare over the next few weeks to enjoy the 28th Ride The Rockies. Remember, bicycle knowledge and skills plus courtesy results in a safe, enjoyable experience on the bike.
  • Bicycle Colorado is the statewide non-profit, supported through membership, improving bicycling across the state. Become a member, www.BicycleColorado.org.

Giving Back…In So Many Ways!

We’re not your typical pledge ride but we are proud to give back in so many unique ways! Ride The Rockies operates under The Denver Post Community Foundation with all proceeds going to The Foundation and then granted back out to Colorado nonprofits. We don’t stop there though! Voluntary donations, community fundraisers, a traveling silent auction and local grants…are all ways contribute to our great state.
  • Voluntary Donations- When you registered for Ride The Rockies we asked for a donation. Your generosity was outstanding! Through this simple, yet important question you helped us raise thousands of dollars. Give yourself a pat on the back!

  • Community Fundraisers- Leaving a positive impact in our host communities is important to Ride The Rockies. One fundraising opportunity for the towns is the community meals. The food you receive in each town is prepared by and served by local organizations, school groups, local caterers and local restaurants. All proceeds stay with the groups serving and they see great profits because of your appetite!
You’ll also notice a different group pouring the frosty beers in each town. These are local nonprofits that keep all proceeds from beer sales. Our partners at Odell Brewing Company sell kegs at cost allowing local groups to keep the profit! So, if you’re questioning having another beer, remember…it’s for the kids!

  • Traveling Silent Auction- Get ready, get set, BID! For the fifth year, Ride The Rockies is hosting a traveling silent auction to raise money for The Denver Post Community Foundation. The opportunity to acquire great items is endless. You’ll have the chance to win high end bikes and bike components, weekend getaways to our 2013 host communities, vacation trips and much more!
The silent auction will be set up daily during Ride The Rockies from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the headquarters site in each host community. Please note that the auction will close on Friday, June 14th at 6:00 p.m.

  • Local Grants – We are thrilled to offer a $5,000 grant to one deserving nonprofit in each host community. This is a competitive process with several amazing organizations applying for each community.
Grant Winners

Please join us in congratulating the eight local non-profit organizations receiving the $5,000 grant from The Denver Post Community Foundation and Ride The Rockies!

Collaboration Corner

In addition to new partnerships, we also have a number of exciting collaborations to announce for the 2013 Tour. Ride The Rockies is proud to work hand in hand with the following organizations in an effort to increase awareness, funds, and volunteers for their services both locally and internationally; Trips for Kids, The Davis Phinney Foundation, Adaptive Sports, Rite of Passage, Bicycles for Humanity, Project Recycle, . Each newsletter will highlight one or two of these organizations as we near this year’s event.

Trips for Kids
The mission of Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder is to build healthy confident kids, by connecting diverse youth to the joy of cycling. Our Ride Program helps underserved youth explore nature and build their fitness and confidence via the seat of a mountain bike. Our Earn-a-Bike Program teaches students the art and skill of bike maintenance and, at the programs end, awards them the bike they helped repair. The organization’s Lucky Bikes Re-Cyclery, fueled by donated bikes from the community, trains and employs urban youth to manage and run the community bike shop’s day-to-day activities. www.tripsforkidsdenver.org

Rite of Passage
ROP is a leading provider of programs and opportunities for at-risk youth. For over 20 years, they have focused on measurable results, quality services and unsurpassed programming for our youth. They have created an environment and choices that assist youth in making the transition from incorrigible teens to goal-oriented young men and women. Students of Rite of Passage will volunteer at Ride The Rockies and assist cyclists with their luggage.
